Such aspirations reflect the central role technology plays in modern life, and the increased status of those who know how to deal with it.
Women who once may have swooned at the sports captain now fall for the computer whizz, says Jaminie Hilton, a Vancouver-based relationship therapist.
"Some geeks are getting the girls because they're techno wizards and that trend is taking over," she says. "Girls want to share their competence with a bright guy who appreciates it, not a bully with his smokes rolled up in the hem of his T-shirt sleeves."
"It began to be clear in the latter part of the 20th century that geeks would inherit the earth. Society has been reorganized," says Thompson. "If you have a world that's run by high technology those skills can be interpreted as the new machismo. Our physicality is meaningless and the nerds are benefiting from it." dpa ag aw
